It's my very first blog giveaway and I have scoured Etsy for the perfect item. Up for winning is a beautiful set of handmade Espresso Mugs from Heritage Valley Pottery. I know that I am pretty much physically unable to read in the morning without clutching a mug of hot coffee. I thought there would likely be many of you that did the same thing, so I found these beautiful mugs via my favorite site in the world...Etsy.
The owner of Heritage Valley Pottery has graciously offered to ship these gorgeous mugs directly to the winner. The description is taken from her shop:
Organic in appearance and ready to serve. Two espresso mugs stained and glazed in black and very unique. Okay, favorite scene ever in a book(this will reveal the level of geekdom I have reached):
Lord of the Rings- The Return of the King
In the battle at Gondor, when Eowyn, princess of Rohan, who has snuck into war with the men disguised as a soldier, is facing the Lord of the Nazgul, who boasts that no "living man" can kill him and she rips off her helmet and replies, "But no living man am I!" Then, she basically whoops his ass (and his ugly dragon steed too).
I regret that I have not read that book, but after that descriptive scene I may have to read about all the ass whoopery going on.
To Kill A Mockingbird where Jem has just been rescued by Boo Radley, and Scout goes to sit on his (Boo's) verandah and looks down the street, visualising everything in the way Boo must have seen it. In just a few words, Harper Lee shows how Scout's world view has totally changed - she realises that Boo, rather than being a monster, is as human as she is.

I love the scene at the end of Fight Club since it is very ambiguous. You don't really know if the narrator has died and done to heaven or if he is still alive. Chuck Palahniuk is an amazing author and really has a way with words.

"They Whisper" by Robert Olen Butler - I'm always entranced by him describing falling in love with a classmate when they x-ray her feet in the shoe store and he looks in the viewer and can see her bones. It's a very intimate and fragile moment for the young narrator.
Haven't heard of Robert Olen Butler but I just looked him up. Keep the comments coming! I love hearing about all these books I haven't read yet.
My favorite ever scene is in a book called Dragon Quest by Anne McCaffery. It's when Lessa, the rightful heir to the hold, who has survived her family being massacred, finally announces herself. i love the way the Dragons bugle when they know they have found their new Queen dragon rider. Love it!

That is a tough call. The scene with Eowyn is what I would have picked but so as not to be redundant, I love the end of Wuthering Heights when Heathcliff dies with a smile on his face, and Nelly goes walking and meets a little boy who says he saw Heathcliff with a woman and "darnut pass 'em." I envision them reunited in death and finally happy.
I love the biblical book East of Eden - I have not read it recently, it had so many scenes, with metaphors. One of the more memorable scenes in the book and movie was at the birthday gift scene at Adam's surprise birthday, Adam happily accepts the announcement of the engagement of Aron and Abra as a birthday present - and blesses their news. Then, he rejects Cal's gift of money that he had made on bean futures to to help with all his father had lost in the lettuce business. He is cruel to his son, and shows how damaging it can be to favor one child over the other, and compare them.
I also have two sons, now 18 and 21, and we have tried very hard to treat them as individuals, try not to compare, but try to be fair in the things we give them, which isn't always that easy.

I loved the book The Mermaid Chair from Sue Monk Kidd (Author of the Secret Life of Bees). I don't know if I have a single favorite scene, but I love the scenes where the characters went on their picnics to some beautifully secluded areas. I imagined myself laying in the described serenity. I made me want to visit South Carolina, which I did with great joy and now I want to move there:-)

My latest fav book is called "The Long Run", it was given to me. There is a scene when the main character learns to walk again for the first time after being hit by a bus (true story too by the way) and this scene is such an amazing inspiration to any human being, a super duper great read.

My favorite part of a book (other than the entirety of God's Word) would be the description of the garden that Mary finds in the book The Secret Garden. I couldn't quote it at the moment...but I just loved the imagery...I always wanted a garden like that!

I have so many favorite scenes from books, but I recently reread "Gone with the Wind" and my favorite scene from that book is when Rhett gets drunk and tells Scarlett that he loved her and then carries Scarlett up the grand staircase.

I will always remember the scene in Jane Eyre where Bertha makes her first appearance as a crazed woman. I went around the rest of the day thinking Jane Eyre was about vampires.

Ok..so my favorite book scene is From Diana Galbadon's OUTLANDER when Jamie and Claire are together one final time and then he pushes her through the time travel stones. The love , the anguish...ahhh. My favorite book series EVER!

I'm a bit more commercial, My best series so far has to be the Twilight series and yes I'm a Twi-Mom
the best part of the book series has to be, when Bella runs to her Edouard when in Rome, when Edouard is certain that Bella has jumped to her death, and now he wants to reveal himself to the humans and be put to death by the Volturi.
But Bella arrives just in time to show Edward that she is not dead but very well alive. Edward think he's in heaven.
I'm an endless romantic.
Oh man, I am a huge Harry Potter nerd. It's almost impossible to pick just one scene that I love, but I would have to go with the first time that Harry and his classmates get a view of the castle. J.K. Rowling describes it so beautifully that you can just feel the magic oozing from the pages. Love it!

ONe of my favorite scene from a book, would be a series of scenes from Eat Pray Love of the heroine in Italy. She is walking around the city and taking in every little moment, every nook and crany, no matter how small. She enjoys every moment no matter how ordinary or short. It reminded me to make time to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. Thank you!

I never could get in to Twilight but I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. I even thought the movies were awesome which is very rare for me. I saw Eat, Pray, Love at the movies but haven't read the book yet. Normally if a movie comes out, I don't read the book.
My favorite scene ever in a book was when... well to be honest I cant think of a specific one... I have read ALOT of books in my life and I guess none of them ever stood out to me in that way... I'm still waiting for the best scene ever

I've always loved the tea party scene in Alice in Wonderland. It's pure, senseless fantasy and that's what makes it so memorable. I want to be at that table asking riddles that have no answers and reciting poetry that makes no sense!

It's hard to say what my favorite scenes is... I shall give you two scenes that I have found priceless: The first is in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, when Ron remembers the House Elves and Hermione realizes everything and kisses him. I love this just because Hermione reminds me of myself with her determined love and help for house elves, I'm the same way with human rights. I love that Ron finally gets her passion and then gets her; it's great.
The second, which is actually the first scene I thought of is found in the beginning of "Tom Sawyer." I adore this book and there are many great and fantastic chapters, but I must say I have always been partial to the scene at the beginning when Tom convinces the entire neighborhood that white-washing the fence is so fun, that they are willing to pay him for it. He comes out with some orange peels, and a plethera of other bizzare things that children have. It's classic wit.

One of my favorite scenes from a book is from To Kill a Mockingbird, when Jem & Scout are rescued and Scout says, "Hi, Boo." very nonchalantly.

One of my fave scenes is in Catcher in the Rye when Holden visits his old teacher at his house and the old teacher offers him tea. I used to be a teacher and I can empathize with that guy trying to offer advice/figure out Holden.

I like the scene in The Descendents (by Kaui Hemmings) when the grandpa hits his granddaughter's friend/boyfriend. The Grandpa warned the boy he would do it and the boy could've ducked, but he didn't. A good book.

One of the scenes I remember most is from "Secret Sacrament" by Sherryl Jordan. Without giving too much away:
The story is much like that of Pocahontas and Avatar in that a man finds a small tribe of people who teach him about himself and the world that he thought he knew. He falls in love and they become his family. Meanwhile there is political turmoil in the "civilized" world which is beginning to creep into his tribe. People are being imprisoned and oppressed.
My favorite scene is that of a certain character who sacrifices his life to save his people. It is not a sacrifice that is quick, like jumping into the line of fire, making the sacrifice that much more inspirational. It brought me to tears.
Ok, choosing a favorite scene is next to impossible, so I'll go with my favorite book of all time and my favorite line in it. Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, when Anna and Vronsky are finally together but their circumstances are too tragic for them to have true happiness. Vronsky is thinking about the feeling of finally getting what you think you want more than anything else ..
"He soon came to feel that the fulfillment of his desires had given him only one grain of the mountain of joy he had been expecting. This fulfillment showed him the eternal mistake people make when they imagine that happiness is the fulfillment of their wishes."
Ah, now I want to read the book again :)
It appears I have TONS of new books on my reading list. Velma, I took a Russian Lit class during college. I was absolutely dreading it but it quickly became one of the best classes I have ever taken. You all are welcome for the giveaway! This is exciting for me and I hope to do things like this once a month.
Wow, it's so difficult to pick one book, not to mention just one scene! But one of my favorite books ever is Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World, by Haruki Murakami. I love the whole book, but one of the greatest scenes is where the main character has to decide between living in the world he was born in and the world he created.

My favorite scene in a book was the moment in which the reader realizes that the protagonist in The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is falling for the local man and NOT her best friend's brother, to whom the reader would assume she is head over heels for. I highly recommend reading this one!

Another scene from a book that I love is in "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet," when the boy finds his girlfriends' favorite jazz musician's record and brings it to her while she and her family are kept at a Japanese Internment camp during WWII. Very touching.

One of my favorite scenes is from The Princess Bride by William Goldman. The entire fencing scene after the man in black had climbed the cliff and Inigo was waiting at the top to kill him. They both fence right handed to trick their opponent and they are both left handed. A fun scene and a great read.

Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley is another great read and the scene when she finds a dead bird on her doorstep is fabulous - the entire book is full of great scenes. thanks for the lovely giveaway!
My hands-down favorite scene ever was in Pride & Prejudice - definitely the part when Lizzy and Darcy FINALLY get together--Darcy's whole, "my affections have not changed" part was sooo romantic and worth the wait!

My second choice for favorite is the Prison Break Scene (The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas)
When Edmond Dantes went to prison, he didn't just lose his freedom. He lost his true love, his family and his reputation. The prison break scene represents the first step towards vindication. It's a truly harrowing scene, one where death hovers over Dantes' head, a perfect allegory for revenge.

My favorite scene from any book was in House of Leaves. Karen puts up single shelf next to a corner, flush with the wall. After having put her books up she turns around to start her next project and hears a thud. The shelf that was once flush with the wall was now 10in from it and the books had fallen.
The whole book was a mind trip but this part was the first time in the story that I realized this was going to be an interesting ride.

I am a HUGE book worm. The Outsiders is one of my favorites.. I can recite the first few pages of it from memory.
I always remember the part where Johnny and Ponyboy were trying to decipher what Frost's Stay Gold poem meant. At the very end (don't want to spoil it!) Johnny gets a letter from Johnny that explains it finally.
That book is just incredible.

Number the Stars is another book that I will always have in my book collection. The part that always gives me goosebumps is when the Nazi's raid the family's home who are trying to hide the daughter's best friend as one of their own non-jewish daughters. That part plays like a movie in my head when I read it. Its terrifying and makes your heart speed up. The entire book is written beautifully.
